Praise be to Allah and peace and blessings be upon His Messengers, our master Mohammed may Allah bless him and his family and companions and those who followed them in truth until the Day of Judgment.

There has come to us a great and blessed month of Ramadan, the month whose greatness has been declared by Allah Almighty and honored by the revelation of the Qur'an. Allah ta ‘alaa says: “The month of Ramadan in which was revealed the Qur’an, a guidance for mankind and clear proofs for the guidance and the criterion (between right and wrong). So whoever of you sights (the crescent on the first night of) the month (of Ramadan i.e. is present at his home), he must observe Sawm (fasts) that month, and whoever is ill or on a journey, the same number [of days which one did not observe Sawm (fasts) must be made up] from other days. Allah intends for you ease, and He does not want to make things difficult for you. (He wants that you) must complete the same number (of days), and that you must magnify Allah [i.e. to say Takbeer (Allahu Akbar: Allah is the Most Great)] for having guided you so that you may be grateful to Him.” [al-Baqarah 2:185].

This blessed month is a great opportunity for goodness, barakah (blessing), worship and obedience towards Allah. It is a great month, a noble season, a month in which hasanat (rewards for good deeds) are multiplied and in which committing sayi’aat (bad deeds) is more serious than at other times. The gates of Paradise are opened and the gates of Hell are shut, and the sinners’ repentance to Allah is accepted. It is a month whose beginning is mercy, its middle is forgiveness and its end is redemption from the Fire.

For the sincere believer, every month is an occasion for worship and his whole life is spent in obeying Allah, but in the month of Ramadan he has even more motivation to do good and his heart is even more focused on worship, and he turns even more to his Lord. By His grace, our generous Lord bestows His bounty upon the fasting believers and multiplies the reward for them on this blessed occasion, so He gives abundantly and rewards generously for righteous deeds.

How can we prepare for Ramadan?

  • We should set ourselves straight so that in Ramadan we will have a higher degree of faith. For faith increases and decreases.
  • After that we should take stock of ourselves and recognize our shortcomings in doing acts of worship such as praying in congregation, remembering Allah (dhikr), paying attention to the rights of neighbours.
  • Then we should take account of deeds to be aware of our sins and of following our whims and desires. We should stop ourselves from persisting in sin, whether the sin is great or small, whether it is by looking at that which Allah has forbidden; or by listening to what Allah has forbidden; or by walking towards things of which Allah does not approve; or by using one's hands to strike in a manner with which Allah is not pleased; or by consuming things that Allah has forbidden.
  • We should never forget that Allah stretches forth His hand during the day to accept the repentance of those who sinned at night, and He stretches forth His hand at night to accept the repentance of those who sinned during the day.

Allah says: “And march forth in the way (which leads to) forgiveness from your Lord, and for Paradise as wide as the heavens and the earth, prepared for Al-Muttaqoon (the pious). Those who spend (in Allah’s Cause) in prosperity and in adversity, who repress anger, and who pardon men; verily, Allah loves Al-Muhsinoon (the good doers). And those who, when they have committed Faahishah (illegal sexual intercourse) or wronged themselves with evil, remember Allah and ask forgiveness for their sins; — and none can forgive sins but Allah — and do not persist in what (wrong) they have done, while they know. For such, the reward is forgiveness from their Lord, and Gardens with rivers flowing underneath (Paradise), wherein they shall abide forever. How excellent is this reward for the doers (who do righteous deeds according to Allah’s Orders)”[Aal ‘Imran 3:133-136]

Say: “O ‘Ibaadi (My slaves) who have transgressed against themselves (by committing evil deeds and sins)! Despair not of the Mercy of Allah, verily, Allah forgives all sins. Truly, He is Oft Forgiving, Most Merciful” [al-Zumar 39:53]

By taking ourselves to account, repenting and seeking forgiveness, this is how we should welcome Ramadan. “The smart man is the one who takes stock of himself and strives to do that which will benefit him after death, and the helpless one is the one who follows his own whims and desires and engages in wishful thinking, (assuming that Allah will forgive him regardless of what he does and that he does not need to strive to good deeds).”

In the month of Ramadan the gates of Paradise are opened and the gates of Hell are shut. The devils are put in chains and a caller cries out each night, O seeker of good, proceed, O seeker of evil, desist.

This month is superior to others in four things:

  • In it, there is the best night of the year, which is Laylat al-Qadr. Allah says: “Verily, We have sent it (this Qur’aan) down in the Night of Al Qadr (Decree). And what will make you know what the Night of Al Qadr (Decree) is? The Night of Al Qadr (Decree) is better than a thousand months (i.e. worshipping Allah in that night is better than worshipping Him a thousand months, i.e. 83 years and 4 months). Therein descend the angels and the Rooh [Jibreel (Gabriel)] by Allah’s Permission with all Decrees, (All that night), there is peace (and goodness from Allah to His believing slaves) until the appearance of dawn” [al-Qadar 97:1-5]. So worship on this night is better than worshipping for a thousand months.
  • In this month, the best of Books was revealed to the best of the Prophets (peace be upon them). Allah says: “The month of Ramadan in which was revealed the Qur’aan, a guidance for mankind and clear proofs for the guidance and the criterion (between right and wrong)”[al-Baqarah 2:185].

"We sent it (this Qur’aan) down on a blessed night [(i.e. the Night of Al Qadr) in the month of Ramadan — the 9th month of the Islamic calendar]. Verily, We are ever warning [mankind that Our Torment will reach those who disbelieve in Our Oneness of Lordship and in Our Oneness of worship]. Therein (that night) is decreed every matter of ordainments. As a Command (or this Qur’aan or the Decree of every matter) from Us. Verily, We are ever sending (the Messengers)” [al-Dukhaan 44:3-5]. It was narrated by Ahmad and by al-Tabaraani in al-Mu’jam al-Kabeer that Waathilah ibn al-Asqa’ (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “The Scriptures of Ibraaheem were sent down on the first of the month of Ramadan. The Tawraat was sent down on the sixth of Ramadan. The Injeel was sent down on the thirteenth of Ramadan. The Zaboor was sent down on the eighteenth of Ramadan, and the Qur’aan was sent down on the twenty-fourth of Ramadan." Classed as hasan by al-Albaani in al-Silsilah al-Saheehah, 1575.
  • In this month, the gates of Paradise are opened and the gates of Hell are shut, and the devils are chained up. It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “When Ramadan comes, the gates of Paradise are opened and the gates of Hell are closed, and the devils are put in chains.” (Agreed upon).

Al-Nasaa’i narrated from Abu Hurayrah that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “When Ramadan comes, the gates of mercy are opened and the gates of Hell are shut, and the devils are put in chains.” Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami’, 471.

Al-Tirmidhi, Ibn Maajah and Ibn Khuzaymah narrated in one report: “When the first night of the month of Ramadan comes, the devils and rebellious jinn are chained up and the gates of Hell are closed, and not one gate of it is opened. The gates of Paradise are opened and not one gate of it is closed. And a caller cries out: ‘O seeker of good, proceed; O seeker of evil, desist. And Allah has those whom He redeems from the Fire, and that happens every night.” Classed as hasan by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami’, 759.

If it is asked, how come we see many evil actions and sins committed in Ramadan, for if the devils are chained up that would not happen? The answer is that evil actions become less for those who observe the conditions and etiquette of fasting; or that the ones who are chained up are some of the devils – namely the rebellious ones – not all of them; or that what is meant is that evil is reduced in Ramadan, which is a proven fact. If evil happens at this time, it is still less than at other times. Even if all of them (the devils) are chained up, that does not necessarily mean that no evil or sin will happen, because there are other causes of that besides the devils, such as evil souls, bad habits and the devils among mankind. Al-Fath, 4/145
  • There are many kinds of worship in Ramadan, some of which are not done at other times, such as fasting, praying qiyaam, feeding the poor, i’tikaaf, sadaqah, and reading Qur’an.

I ask Allah, the Exalted, the Almighty, to help us all to do that and to help us to fast and pray qiyaam, and to do acts of worship and to avoid doing evil. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds.

Praise be to Allah, prayer and peace be upon the Master of Messengers, our Prophet Muhammad, his family and companions.

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) has favoured some days and months for fasting over others, such as the month of Sha'ban, which is a great act of worship. There are many hadeeth which confirm this act of the Messenger in the month of Sha'ban :

  • Usaamah ibn Zayd said: “I said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, I do not see you fasting more in any other month than in Sha’ban.’ He said, ‘That is a month concerning which many people are heedless, between Rajab and Ramadan. It is the month in which people’s deeds are taken up to the Lord of the Worlds, and I would like my deeds to be taken up whilst I am fasting." al-Nasaa’i, and enshrined in a series of Albani as saheeh by 1889.
  • Anas ibn Maalik, (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "The Messenger of Allah use to fast without breaking it until we said, 'The Messenger of Allah will not break his fast this year', and then he use to stop the fast until we said, 'The Messenger of Allah will not fast this year', the best fasting for him used to be in Sha'ban." [Reported by Imam Ahmad].
  • In Saheehayn (Bukhari & Muslim) and others, Aa'isha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "The Messenger of Allah used to fast until we said he wouldn't stop fasting, and stop fasting until we said he would never fast, and I never saw this more in any other month than in Sha'baan."
  • Ahmad, Abu Dawood, al-Nasaa’i and Ibn Maajah narrated that Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: “I never saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) fast two consecutive months except for Sha’ban and Ramadaan.” Al-Tirmidhi narrated that Ibn al-Mubaarak said: "It is possible in the language of the Arabs, if a person fasts most of a month, it is said that he fasts the entire month…" Ibn Hajar (May Allah have mercy on him) said: "He use to voluntarily fast in Sha'ban more than in the other months, and he used to fast most of Sha'baan."

Some of the Virtues of Fasting in this Month:

Some scholars have said that fasting during Sha'ban is better than fasting during any other month, including Muharram, in which fasting comes second best to Ramadan. This is because the best voluntary fast comes either before or after the Fardh (obligatory) fast of Ramadan. Fasting during Sha'ban is similar to the Sunnah prayer before the obligatory one. In the same way, the six fasts of Shawal after Ramadan, are similar to the Sunnah prayer after the obligatory one. Likewise, emphasised Sunnah actions are better than completely voluntary Sunnah actions. Fasting follows the same pattern.

Imam Ibn Rajab, may Allah have mercy with him said: "Fasting in Sha'ban is a practice, so that there will be no shock when entering into the fast of Ramadan. Make it a habit, then you will find the fast of Sha'ban to be sweet and enjoyable."

Sha'ban is like an introduction to Ramadan, so what is prescribed in Ramadan is also prescribed in Sha'ban, like fasting, reciting the Qur'an and so on. This is preparation for receiving Ramadan with a pure soul. So, in order to become more obedient to Allah, the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to fast a lot in this blessed month. Many people are careless, yet this was the condition of the messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), who has been completely forgiven. So, what about us ???

The Prophet (peace be upon him) had two wise reasons for fasting more in Sha'ban:

  • The first can be understood from one of his sayings: ‘That is a month concerning which many people are heedless, between Rajab and Ramadan. It is the month in which people’s deeds are taken up to the Lord of the Worlds, and I would like my deeds to be taken up whilst I am fasting." During the month of Sha'ban, there are two kinds of people who are heedless in worship. There are those who, due to bid'ah and prevailing myths, take more care during Rajab than Sha'ban. There are also those who do not practise any form or worship at all, except during Ramadan. It is known that the reward of worship increases when many people are heedless, because it is difficult for the soul. Also, the best act of worship is that which troubles the nafs.
  • The second reason concerns the deeds presented to Allah during this month, and the most accepted deed for Him is fasting. Fasting increases the humility of the heart. This voluntary act helps the year's good deeds gain acceptance.

CAUTION:

Some people are lazy during the first half of Sha'ban, then wait until the second half of the month before they begin fasting. This is incorrect. The Prophet (peace be upon him) forbade Muslims to fast after the first half of Sha'ban. This is stated in the following hadith: "If Sha'ban is half over don't fast" (labelled as Saheeh by Al Albaani in Saheeh Sunan Abi Dawood). The reason for this prohibition - and Allah knows best, is because it might be too late for the slave to have a chance to have his deeds accepted. If the fasting person's deeds are accepted in the first half of the month, then all he has to do in the second half, is prepare for Ramadan.

And Allah knows best.

May Allah accept us and help us to do good deeds constantly. May He also help us to take advantage of time as it pleases Him.
